I don't like the voice of the audio narrator, but the story is super cool. I probably have to listen to it a second time back to back, cause there is so much queer stuff going on that I certainly miss some of it.

I'm glad I gave Newitz another chance after my disappointment with "Automonous". This novel reads much better.

Loving the alt history details. Some of them are VERY clever and deeper than expected (like how in the actual Flim Flam (sp) book the character fleeing the alternate world he found where women are in charge).
Also the outfit descriptions are dope, especially the New Women of the 1800s. Speaking of, I love the comparisons of 1890s anarchism with the 1990s riot grrl scene.

"I looked at Anita, waiting for me to spill my guts, and decided to stop lying to myself. Beneath the modern political rhetoric and academic theories of history, I had an ancient hope that was indistinguishable from Spiritualism. If my edit took, maybe the good I'd done would outweigh the evil."

The time travel in this is so unique. I don't think I've ever read about a kind of time travel that was discovered as an ancient geological mechanism rather than being an invention of the future, or how time travel is so commonplace, even to people of long gone time periods.

Imagine my surprise when it’s revealed the time machine is based on a wormhole discovered in Flin Flon! Main character even waits for a small plane to taker her back to WINNIPEG!

I really enjoyed this book with its ideas of female and non-patriarchal empowerment and the ideas of a vibrant but complex (see the scenes centering around violence) feminism. I thoroughly enjoyed how it brought the 1890s to life and deftly commented on the moment of its writing within larger themes. I only thought that the middle drags a bit in terms of the writing, but this might disappear on a reread.

So far, I really enjoy the nuanced commentary on violence and anarchism, on women's rights and partiarchal privilege that connects the 1890s and the 1990s (probably across timestreams). i really enjoy the way the book deals with both systemic and individual violence as a road to hell paved with the belief in a better world. In terms of characters, I do have a slight preference for the 1890s crowd so far.

The "rules" for time travel in this world are strangely specific. I wonder if they are for plot reasons or humor or just because the author is quirky.

Can’t tell if I’m enjoying this book or not, the plot is intriguing, but it has way much more gore than expected.
