50 pages in and this book has already shaken me

A lot of this is more unexpectedly brutal than I thought it would be, wow.

Wow, the ways this uses time travel in the context of history but also small, personal moments is so greeeeat. And the way the Tess POV is in conversation with the Beth POV is just masterfully done. I'm super emotional and also completely intellectually engaged.

Omg, this is just so great. And painful. But great!

Got birthday books and now my whole shelf is rearranged because I'm too antsy to start some that were way back. I hope this goes good because it caught my eye and is all I've been thinking about

In Tess' timeline, a new character has arrived from the future and any "science" completely breaks down. The time travel had established rules but the "tech" this character uses seems to mostly be a flashy ~☆~future~☆~ element.

The last chapter took an unexpectedly grizzly turn. Definite content warnings for violence if this is a book you might be interested.

Only read about two scenes from this book and they are both super traumatic... I hope it’s worth it!!

The world-building is world class. The characters are fleshed out and real and flawed and lovable. I feel at once safe in the words of a competent writer that lets my suspension of disbelief for a wholly different world float along the waves and doesn't demand too much, and terrified by the dedicated power and ease of ancient sexism trying to maintain its stronghold.

Many of the pop culture references are jarring. As though the book is screaming that it's not meant for me.

Ugh this is the third time someone's been about to kill time-traveling misogynist Elliot and every time Tess/Beth has stopped them. Pls let someone kill him already.

People who've just returned from time travel talk to each other about differences in what they remember from before they left to what they find now. Things like a fast food chain not being popular, or a bill not getting passed...and then one mentions a good friend of theirs, and no one else remembers her. Because in the newly created timeline they now all live in, she died thirty years ago. SO CREEPY.

The way time travel works is cool and I think unique: humanity has known about time traveling Machines embedded in the Earth since the Bronze Age. There are even morality tales about time travelling properly in this world's medieval manuscripts! And the machines are controlled by drumming the earth.

She nodded. “I got a big raise, too. I can buy a house.” Morehshin talked around the bacon in her mouth. “That’s good. A house is important. My sisters have a saying: If you have property, you can’t be property.”

Wow! Love that saying!!

Narrator is still off-putting.

The subject is extremely important, but my first impression is that the delivery is very heavy-handed so far.

Time traveling + queer characters, but also Emma Goldman character assassination so HMMMMMM.
