During the Mexican war, Grant’s unit is fighting through a city that is roughly laid out in a grid system. They are taking casualties from “snipers” farther up the side streets at the intersections. Someone needs to go back for ammo, so Grant puts one foot in his stirrup, one arm around his horse, THEN LAYS PARALLEL TO THE HORSE FOR COVER AND RIDES BACK THROUGH THE TOWN AND JUMPS A FOUR FOOT FENCE LIKE THIS

This book is written in a way that makes it very hard for me to read without falling asleep. Something about author's style? I dunno, it's like they want to cram in every single historically documented quote or fact about each moment and the result is a muddle.
