Status Updates From Walkable City Rules: 101 St...

The fact that this book was right next to the Christian books, I knew God has me right where he wants me. This book was made for me and I’m only 5 pages in!

Walkability is wealth! It increases tax dollars and money in our pocket. 20% of our income goes to transportation and paying the city to upkeep it. “Every mile driven by car costs the city 20 cents.” Car crashes kill 1.25M people a year!

Kind of dying that I’m just 50 pages away from being able to go to the library again, but I promptly forget when reading so that speaks to the quality 👌

I want a couple great zinger sentences to stick with me:

“Any [road] lane that is wider than necessary should be understood as a health risk and addressed with appropriate alarm.” (113)

“[M]ost transit agencies need to be reminded that streets that kill pedestrians threaten their customer base.” (117)

Most of these ideas are familiar (though I still enjoy having them in concise two-page summaries), but #10 about the long-term revenue of development was new to me! Helps make sense of why suburban sprawl continues, sadly.

Last book of my oath! Stepping foot in a library got me revved up to start this final journey, and I can already tell it’s going to be a bite-at-a-time read and a useful tool for future advocacy. Jeff is a little quirky and definitely writing to his audience, so there’s a little more leg work to communicate the ideas well but it’s a hugely helpful starting point.
