I don’t have the spare brain cells for this rn. Give me a pumpkin-spice, autumn leaves, cosy, ambience filled cringey romance rn pls and thank you.

The first few chapters are fascinating. Kennedy makes a good point that despite what anti abortion extremists claim about ‘infanticide’, this has greatly decreased now that the waning influence of religion means there’s less stigma associated with so called ‘illegitimate’ children. Also decreased with increased access to contraception and abortion means less terrified girls hiding pregnancies.

Chapter one; Eve was framed
Depicts how due to gender roles and prescribed behaviour female lawyers are seen to be at a disadvantage to male lawyers. Not to mention they are paid less.

The introduction depicts the fundamental flaws within our system as a western society. From victim blaming to women having to conform to gender roles in order to gain respect from society. The intro also discusses how male dominated the political industry is, meaning that decisions concerning women and female rights are often ignored. I.e the fact there is tax on sanitary products - and they aren’t free.

So far this book makes you feel a bit sick because it explores really important injustices in the system. Very interesting read.

After I finish I’ll go back to listen to the chapter titles again to see if I remember the salient principles that were presented. This is a hugely important book and I want to do it justice by ensuring my understanding as much as possible. It’s very eloquently written but an audiobook can take a bit more effort from the reader in my experience.

It sometimes feels like certain sections contradict each other (eg the role of the absent father) but it all comes down to context, a principle that is emphasised in each chapter.

I like how this is organised by various female archetypes / stereotypes and it’s doing a good job of showing how those types carry weight across each step and space of the justice system.

Feels like the book that connects invisible women to the secret barrister and can be read as a good companion to either.

Really good so far. Bits are sad to read. But I feel that I am being educated.

Well this chapter on the extent and nature of violence suffered by women at the hands of former and current romantic partners is truly grim

Patriarchy is a virus that lives deep in the body politic. We have to become more confident in naming it as one of the main blights on all our lives. Men and women both
