Quite a lot about the horrors of being a thrall to a restaurant. I know all of this too well, and it's funny to think how little has changed since the time this book was written.

Decided awhile back that I'd read Orwell's other books. Started with Homage to Catalonia, now this will be the second one I read, aside from his other more well known works.

I went to the street today where George Orwell lived in Paris at No. 6 Rue du Pot-de-Fer. It is longer a slum as described in this book; it is now full of thriving bistros and bars. No longer are you able to be drunk for the equivalent of a shilling, a Redbull will set you back 6 euros!

just a reminder that orwell's the best

Although I have no idea what's really going on, the tone is satirical and just downright funny.

Having waited tables in the F&B industry myself, I found Orwell's first part journal on working as a dishwasher in Paris vividly portrayed the hierarchy and lives of cook - waiter - manager - dishwasher in an established restaurant. Cooks would not see themselves as manual workers, they are essential, even more crucial, to the everyday operation of a restaurant, than the obsequious waiters.

Not the worst but not the best. Sole good bits there at the end. More than ready to be done with it now. Honking I should've just gone with 1984 as my first Orwell book after all. 2.8 stars.

Chapter 32 - The commentary on swearing and slang was quite interesting.

"At this moment there are men with university degrees scrubbing dishes in Paris for ten on fifteen hours a day. One cannot say it is mere idleness on their part...they have simply been trapped by a routine which makes thought impossible."

And the same thing happens 80+ years later.

This isn't all that great. I just want to get it over and done with.

So tired of the anti semitism that is always in these old books. Ah well I'm going to finish it this time.

اگر کسی در پاریس مثلاً بیشتر از ده فرانک برای یک وعده خوراک گوشت پرداخته باشد باید یقین کند که غذایش آنگونه دستمالی شده است. در رستورانهای خیلی ارزان وضع تفاوت دارد، در آن جاها با غذا طور دیگری رفتار میکنند. گوشت را با چنگال از ماهیتابه برمیدارند و توی بشقاب میگذارند بدون اینکه دستمالی کنند. تقریبا میتوان گفت: هرچه بیشتر پول بدهید بیشتر عرق و آب دهان نوش جان خواهید کرد. کثافت از خصوصیات لاینفک هتلها و رستورانها است..

In one section of this book, George Orwell wishes that he could be Émile Zola for a second to describe the situation in his work place in a perfect way. I personally think that he doesn't need that because he is doing a great job being himself. Very interesting and thought provoking book which made me change my perception about homeless people.

صراحًة مش قادرة اكملها فالبداية كنت متحمسة ولكن كثرة التفاصيل اللي ذكرها اورويل عن الفندق الذي يعمل فية بشكل مُفصل جدا مخلتنيش استمتع بالرواية ومدخلتنيش في مود القراءة، فمش هكملها. اسفة أورويل

Reading some of the passages describing conditions in a hotel restaurant may make one reconsider eating out ever again......

It's just so, so good.

Really enjoying this, though I suppose what else is to be expected of the literary genius of Orwell? Great pace and narrative style, I expect to have this novel finished within the next few hours.

Been a long time since I picked this book up, but love the context all the same. George Orwell is fleshing out his ideas about how society does not work for the betterment of all classes, which we later see in his exemplary works, Animal Farm and 1984,
