We are the memories we don't remember, which live in us, which we feel, which makes us sinf and dance and pray the way we do. Feeling the memories that flare and boom unexpectedly in our lives like blood through a blanket from a wound made by a bullet fired by a man shooting us in the back for our hair, for our heads, for a bounty, or just to get rid of us.

“You’re not ever supposed to know - not all the way. That’s what makes the whole thing work the way it does. You can’t know. That’s what makes us keep going.”

“If you have the option to not think about or not even consider history, whether you learned it right or not, or whether it even deserves consideration, that’s how you know you’re onboard the ship that serves hors d’oeuvres and fluffs your pillows while others are out at sea, swimming and drowning…”

A slow, and to me, a bit disjointed start, but it started to pick up and I am now enjoying a few of the characters. A wide range of character types in this book. Though, I find many of their introductions to be tedious at times - it became a bit predictable when a new character was introduced they would have some tragic and depressing backstory. This is fine in of itself, but the predictability became grating.

The author writes like an excellent essayist—tight, evocative imagery, showing all without telling, and doing it all with lots of personality.

Lots of sadness (porn) in the introductory Octavia chapter: her dad gets shot at for stealing plants from someone's garden, her friend Manny's dad assaults his wife (Manny nearly kills him; he also steals cars), and Octavia's mom and brother are killed in a car accident. I get that "the Native American experience is full of pathos" is part of the point, but man.

I am not sure I am going to finish this one, the writing is so bad, I have read half a dozen different characters now, but they are all the same, same word/language usage, same shitty situations, same absolute need to be super native american indian. Perhaps that is the point, but its not good. I'm going to give it to 50% but if its still this bad, I'm giving up.

I struggle to remember more minor characters so that has made this book a little challenging to follow
