While reading the first few chapters I could feel the author's rage as they poured themselves into it. I wish there were sources for some of the claims in the prologue, but when looking it up they had truths. I didn't realize this was a collection of different people's stories until I was on the fourth story: "What I want to do, is to document Indian stories in Oakland" (Orange 40). The stories connect to the author.

You're not ever supposed to know. Not all the way. That's what makes the whole thing work the way it does. We can't know. That's what makes us keep going.

Us bears, you Indians, we been through a lot. They tried to kill us. But then when you hear them tell it, they make history seem like one big heroic adventure across an empty forest. There were bears and Indians all over the place.Sister, they slit all our throats.
I really didn't want Opal's chapter to end. Incredible so far.

‘They took everything and ground it down to dust as fine as gunpowder, they fired their guns into the air in victory and the strays flew out into the nothingness of histories written wrong and meant to be forgotten. Stray bullets and consequences are landing on our unsuspecting bodies even now.’

I love the way the characters are all interconnecting, it makes me very glad that I am trying to color code for each character group. It is turning out to be very beautiful, both in colors and in the story progression

I think the story of the 3 brothers is my favorite so far but I am still really having a hard time getting through the sadness of this whole book, even though it is really well written. I just wish the story was more balanced with the joys of a rich culture as well, like Dene brought up in his project synopsis.

I’m intrigued by the different perspectives. I may have a hard time remembering who is who as I continue to read.

I like the way the stories are connected in small ways so far and the way each voice is distinct and feels like their story is maybe a part of Dene's project. But something still feels off so far.
