Oh my goodness I'm LOVING this book. The hidden meanings, the culture, the downright poetic writing. I'm really enjoying this book. Loving the intertwined storytelling too.

I think I found a new favorite book type: anthologies

This book is rocking my soul!!! Amazing

Some parts of this book are great and some parts of it are fine. I kind of feel like some of the voices blend together, each echoing the last, almost like a round but maybe that's the point.

Not going to finish

Really powerful anthology book. Enjoying it a lot - hard to put it down. Even through the heat and the smog.

They just referenced 2001: A Space Odyssey in this book. WHAT A GREAT MOVIE!

Another Aboriginal read. This one is about an FASD man and his story, finding meaning and purpose in his identity. I heard it's really powerful. Looking forward to this one! Having a Metis heritage myself, it'll be great to learn more about all Indigenous people.

HOLY SHIT ORVILLLL

Great debut novel that shows the potential of this author. Liked the creative storytelling through many characters vignettes. Missed on the potential for depth and connection to and within the characters. But still excited to see what he writes next.

Amazing! So important to hear the voice of a young native person.

“That’s their culture,” Blue says.
“What is?”
“Taking over.”
“I don’t know. My mom’s white—”
“You don’t have to defend all white people you think aren’t a part of the problem just because I said something negative about white culture,” Blue says.”

Finally. I have been on a book hangover for nearly 9 months now. After I read “City of Thieves” in December, I had a hard time getting into any book I was not forced or obligated to read. I think the spell is broken and I think this book is my cure. Keep your fingers crossed.

I am reading this super slowly because I do not want to miss anything. I also don't want it to end. This might be my favourite read of the year so far.

Everybody seems to be at the powwow: the stick-up artists and their 3D printer gun; Jacqui and Opal; Blue, Jacqui's daughter whom she gave away; Jacqui's three sons (Orvil is going to dance for prize money); the guy doing the interviews about living as a Native American in Oakland; and the emcee announcer who just happens to be Edwin Black's father, whom he doesn't know. Edwin works with Blue running the powwow.

fantastic writing & characters, tragically funny & smart.

I can already tell this will one of my top books of the year..

Characters who elicit interest and sympathy immediately. A setting as foreign as another continent. Tommy Orange has drawn me into this world, my world, too.

Thomas Frank will be a drummer at the powwow. He was born with an arrhythmic heart beat; he was born drumming on just about everything, looking for different sounds. He loves the big drums they use at the powwows. I have been to a Pueblo powwow in Taos, New Mexico. They looked like they were having fun, like a state fair. Another guy made five guns using a 3D printer. They're going to use one to stick up the powwow.
