The discussion of the marble statue and the difference between seeing and looking is the most clear analogy yet in helping me better understand Lacan's mirror stage.

This book is worth it alone for Zupančič's quick review of Nietzsche's overall thoughts and themes. Most especially the discussion of passive and active nihilism, and how it tracks with Lacan's thoughts on sublimation and the ethics of desire.

Reading Nietzsche through a Lacanian Lens? What's not to love? Repetition, Difference, Event... I love seeing these themes I've grown interested in stretching back through lineages of thinkers. Maybe if I was a philosophy major I would know all this already, but I love being surprised by seeing these concept-melodies threading their way through time and minds. The thrill of being self taught. Zupančič is joy to read.

All ‘it was’ is a fragment, a riddle, a dreadful accident—until
the creative will says to it, ‘But thus I willed it.’”

"Upon space and time sleeps midday—: /Only your eye—monstrously,/ Gazes at me, infinity!" Here (and in conformity with a long poetic tradition) the abyss of infinity is contained in the eye that gazes at us (Hegel called this "the night of the world").
