Revenge is a fool’s game, except when you win

Rose (Martin’s lady friend) is told by her father that she shouldn’t get too close to Martin because he is a psycho. Rose ignores her father’s pleas and insists that she can fix him. As this book takes place before all the others so far, I can tell you that she, in fact, does not.

The lands of the north are ruled by birds. The swamps by a heron and the mountains by the owls.
I don’t know why some birds are more sentient than others. Dippers and sparrows can barely string sentences together while owls and robins can speak fine. Falcons, kites, and eagles are somewhere in between; they’re Scottish.

I don’t know why all the characters keep making fun of this one mole for liking soup.

Martin kicks a baby off a cliff, attacks a gannet in front of her children, and tries to drown a lizard in porridge.

Martin is a very violent mouse; he really wants to kill some babies.

No wonder he remains after death, possessing young rodents to do battle. His lust for blood cannot be satiated within a single lifetime.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party is joining the circus.

The large fish attack: a series constant

They don’t say what type of fish, but it’s probably a pike; it always is.

A first for the series: a character who is of one of the protagonist species is working for the bad guys. Usually some species are always bad guys (weasels, rats, etc.) while the rest are always good guys (otters, mice, moles, etc.)
Birds are chaotic neutral.

A badger antagonist would be cool.

Bad guy is a mix of the main villains from book 2 and 4.
He’s a pirate with slaves like villain 4, and has a fortress like villain 2; she was cool because she was a kitty.

Interestingly enough, the wildcat queen is the only villain whose entire species was not depicted as 100% villainous. Her brother was very nice
