And he understood that he would love her forever, would cherish her forever. Not because she was the only one he could touch.
Because she was the only one who touched him. Amber was the only one who’d reached the cold heart he kept inside. She’d taught him to love. She’d shown the Reaper that there was so much more to life than just death.
His lips pressed to hers.
And he was finally at peace.

“I think you’ve got the wrong girl,” Luke said, truly considering things now. “You don’t need someone so…good. Perhaps, brother, what you really need is a walk on the darker side.”
Leo glanced back at him. “That side would lead me straight to hell.”
“Oh, yes, no doubt.” Luke smiled. “But wouldn’t it be a fun ride?”

It hadn’t always been that way. Once, they’d been so close…until the world had said they must be enemies.
Until Luke had been told he was bad.
And Leo was good.
Only lately, Leo had begun to show more than a few bad qualities of his own.

And that was when he caught it…the briefest of flashes, but it was there. Envy. In Leo’s eyes. The great and powerful Lord of the Light envied him.
Because in the end, Leo is alone.

“You’re the one mated to him.”
Mina laughed again—this time, the sound was more nervous than musical. “I’m the one in love with him.”
So that story was true. “Does he love you?”
“He does,” Luke answered.

Mina!

Cass glared at him—and Luke. As if he were the only one with a fucked-up family—the terror twins could hardly judge him.

“Are you seriously trying to kiss here in the middle of all these bodies?” Luke demanded. “Because that is both wrong and sad.”

“- I was dealing with fucking twenty other world-ending problems. The apocalypse is always a step away.”
“Amen,” Leo mumbled.

“There’s more to life than power. You both need to learn that lesson. Maybe then you can avoid killing each other.”

She was the woman the Reaper loved. And Death wasn’t going to let her go.

His gaze searched hers. “What kind of man would you love?”
The question actually gave her pause. “Someone who would fight the dark for me.” Her smile felt sad. “And the light.” Because that was what it would truly take.
His hand fell away.
Right. She wanted the impossible.

“Once upon a time…” Wasn’t that how the best stories began? Or the worst ones?

It seemed to burn right through his body, pushing away the coldness that had surrounded him for so long. A cold that had gone soul-deep.

Gahhh, these two are so sweet.

“I didn’t think my knight in shining armor would be Death.”

“We will destroy her,” Leo whispered.
And, one day…each other.
“Sometimes,” Luke said as he tipped back his head and glared up at the black smoke. “I fucking hate prophesies.”

“The world can’t keep going unless you’re in it.” His jaw hardened. “Not my world.”

“Close your eyes, sweets,” he whispered. “Everything will be okay.”
No lie had ever sounded sweeter.”

“The thing about family…they can turn on you, too. Sometimes, the worst danger that you can ever face can come from the ones closest to you.”

“Most myths are real. That’s why life is fun.”

“You don’t want me as an enemy, Reaper.”
“No? Well, since I’m not exactly in the market for friends and I don’t generally give a damn about enemies, …”

Leo started sweating.

Now that’s not something you see everyday.

This is fun. I like this duo already.
