So far this JavaScript book, at times, feels like this guy is showing off as he hacks the parts of the language, perhaps only he finds ugly.

Ok, it's not literature, but I am reading it cover-to-cover. It's unlike any other programming book I've read. Instead of exhaustively listing out every detail of the language, he focuses on a proper subset which makes a better language than the whole. And his writing is refreshingly spare - so no skimming.
