Reading about a desert adventure in this heat is not ideal but alas.

So far this book is a little slower.

"Yet as powerful as the Shade is, consider the sources from which that power stems. The instinct to survive is, in part, driven by fear. So even though the Shade may appear utterly fearless, to some degree, fear must be a part of that which drives and motivates him. No one is completely without fear, Eyron. Fear is a part of every living creature."

This is a part that I believe many people would describe as slow. 3 pages of describing the life cycles that happen in the Athasian dessert. I find it beautiful and thought provoking.
She had always somehow thought if the desert as an empty and desolate place, but it was far from that. It was full of life, though of a sort that had, of necessity, found ways to adapt to the inhospitable climate.

Had I known, perhaps things might have been different. I might not have allowed myself to fall in love with him. I might not have built up my hopes and expectations...

If like I am Eyron.
"Eyron was the world-weary and cynical adult who always weighed the consequences of every action taken by the others. For every reason Sorak had to do something, Eyron could usually come up with three or four reasons against it."
