Despite what is a seemingly transparent plot, I find I am enjoying these characters quite a bit (although the dramalama brought to YOU by refusing to communicate is driving me a bit batty)

I love how 80s this is. The time period is almost like a separate character. I'm getting Jackie Collins flashbacks...and the urge to buy some neon tights and Sun-In. :D

I've had a terrible week, so I'm really looking forward to reading this. I love Derrolyn, I love her writing, and I love the 1980s. I think this will work out well.

Lola had just made it to the door when it swung open, revealing a familiar face.

Oh, shit!

"I thought you were a nice girl, but you're just a whore like all the rest of them."

Whoa, whoa, whoa there guy. Let's not get carried away here. I mean, pointing a loaded gun at her face is one thing. But calling her a whore? Really?

"So it's back to my original plan," Sam said. "I'm going to beat it out of him."

Sigh. Can we cut the stupid macho crap out now? That isn't going to work. I think he's got a little more clout than you. If you beat him up you are signing your own death warrant. Capisce?

He got down on his knees and pulled out a roll of shop towels and a can of paint thinner, proceeding to start cleaning the spray paint from her battered little car.

Wow, this is a man.

"What, did you get one of each?" She managed a wan smile.

"I didn't know what kind you liked."

"What if I don't like doughnuts?"

Now he smiled knowingly at her. "Nobody doesn't like doughnuts."

Ooooh, me! *waves arm wildly* ME! I don't like doughnuts!

She aimed the gun directly between Lola's eyes.

Wow, this woman has WAY too much drama in her life, for serious.

"After all, that little tramp brought everything on herself."

Lola's fists clenched, imagining a girlfriend waiting for him in Boston, sitting home blissfully unaware while he trolled the bars in search of stupid vulnerable women.

Even in the dim light she could see the surprise on his face. "Are you afraid of me?"

"Should I be?" she asked.

"Hey." He backed up with his palms raised. "I just wanted to make sure you got out of here okay."

I like this 'back up with palms raised' move.

Her traitorous body melted into his, limp and yielding...

UGH! Not her traitorous body!

Ouch. I can't forgive you for saying that.

So true. Ex-boyfriends usually come back.

She looked down at his hand on her arm, her jaw tightening.

...so there was only one thing for her to do. She was going to have to hate him - REALLY hate him. Lola set about hating him with the same intensity that she'd employed in perfecting an original recipe for flan.

Frighteningly, the airline crews were among the heaviest of drinkers, cheerfully breaking their twelve hour "bottle to throttle" rule, drinking and laughing boisterously until last call drove them up the elevator and into their rooms for the night.

Yes, this is called "the pre-takeoff takeoff."
