Status Updates From Crooked

got half way thru to realize most scenes were written over rather than happening on the page. taking a break bc i want to read a book where things happen in front of me.

ive been googling the names of minor characters in this book, & almost all of them were real. grossman very seamlessly & convincingly weaves them into his narrative. the book feels extremely well researched, tho i dont know dick about american history so i'm easily impressed.

the problem is that i can't make myself picture a 'young dick nixon'. all i see is cartoon nixon in the histeria show from the 90s

honestly this is both hilarious, sad, and mysterious so far, with really effortless prose. surprised by how much im enjoying such a scalzian premise; its actually taking itself seriously which i really love. america is rotten to the core, and that's the fundamental thrust of the book so far. gotta love that rn. if i dnf itll be because the book flinches away from this early theme

I love the creativity of the plot, though at times it feels like reading the ramblings of someone in the Q universe. Politicians are secretly involved in the occult! A horrifying monster has been rising from the depths of America since the 17th century! Also I love the idea of Nixon being particularly talented in the dark arts. I'm excited to find out more.
