So far this has been convicting and encouraging and I’ve been sharing its truths of Gods calling and challenge for pastors with the rest of my coworkers at church. I’m praying about how to present this truth with our elder team in a way that is well received.

Ch 3 took a while to get through because of how convicting it was. Cut like a sword.

This is a really good book thus far for anyone interested in ministry or for any Christian looking to understand the calling of ministry better.

Reading for ordination : so far incredible read or ministry leaders. The humility and care with which this is written is valuable and felt. Before heading into any ministry leading, context ready this book.

I was told to read this years later into the pastoral ministry, but as I chip away at it, I am more convinced it is a book for a first year seminary student.

The first two chapters lit me up. I feel as if I recently encountered this problem in me—a sick soul, where I saw myself not as a sinner in need of grace, but attempting to “find other messiahs.” I felt as if the gospel was enough to save me from my sin (and I knew theologically that it is what frees me from shame, people’s approval, etc), but it was not carried out practically. I love this book so far.

"The treasures... of self become all the more seductive and powerful when I... lose sight of the glories of what I've been given in Christ. ...I begin to think of myself as poor when grace has made me rich, and I seek riches in places where they simply cannot be found. But I need not run away in shame,... because the grace of the cross has covered this struggle as well and will work again today to rescue me from me."

Basic but profound - forgetting the basics is how everything often goes wrong after all.

This is probably one of the most brutal, most important books I have ever read. It is nailing my hide to the wall. Thank God for grace.

This is a book I should have read long, long ago. I'm beginning the year with it, in the hopes that through it Christ will expose my blindspots, humble my heart, and provide abundant grace for the year ahead.

Have we accomplished our training task if we produce generations of seminary graduates who have big theological brains but tragically diseased hearts? I am convinced that the crisis of pastoral culture begins in the seminary class. It begins with classrooms that are academic without being pastoral, with brains becoming more important than hearts, with an information-based handling of the Word - p. 52
