I'm four chapters and four pages of notes in. I like the vibe of the book, and the footnotes are helpful, but I'm hoping Sprinkle will tease out some of the differences between "leadership" and "authority"—so far they seem to be treated as synonyms (and they aren't).

Engaging with 1 Tim, Sprinkle clarifies the meaning of αὐθεντεῖν, directly engageing with the primary sources. No small task for a book aimed at the layman! He concludes that αὐθεντεῖν indicates a secular authority represented by masters and slaves, not godly leaders.

He also argues tentatively that the opposition in Ephesus is the cult of Artemis, which can explain certain features in 1 Tim.
