When I began this book, it felt rather ridiculous that I, a person trained on Homer and Vergil to be a highfalutin Classical philologist, should be weighing in about one of the crudest sequences of political writings ever to manifest; then it began to feel less ridiculous.

This book was conceived from the suspicion that I— a translator, literary critic, and cultural historian— had something to offer in the fight for reproductive freedom in the United States: a perspective on how long and how exuberantly communications campaigns against this freedom have been going on.
