To this point of the story, wehave since been introduced to the two male romantic interests and their inner monologue.

They're worse than Maddy. Both in how they think and behave.

I see and get what Jeffrey Eugenides is doing narratively on an intellectual level and what commentary he's making. But his characters are irritating in a way I can't look past to make space for the literary examination.

There are moments of really beautiful thought and insight, particularly in the parts surrounding religion.

But most of this has just been a litany of insufferable people being miserable and insufferable.

The worst is easily Madeline. Even after being warned about what she is doing, she turns and still bloody does it as if she knows better because she studies it in books.
