Took a break from this series but I’m loving this book so far! Coming back I realised how invested I am in the characters!

It seems a bit slow to me. Having trouble staying interested. I don’t think I’ll read the next book in the series .

Why do I allways feel tense when Peter rings a doorbell and the author proceeds to describe the woman opening it?

So....a public school in England is a posh school that you pay for...here in the US it's a free school.

So far its very information based which I'm struggling to grapple with. I'm sure the plot will get going the further I go into the book. But so far it's mehh?

“Why not just kill me now?”
Well done, Peter, I thought, let’s put that idea in his head. -p232
Ah, yes Peter, that’s exactly what you want to do in a hostage situation.

“‘Peter,’ Saïd Lesley. ‘ From a purely operational point of view I believe that would be a really fucking bad idea.’”
That’s one of many amazing quotes in this book.

When a little girl in Victorian clothing stares motionless at you from a distance, what would you do? I would just walk away. But not Peter, no no, he is a proper Bobby, and would go investigate. Good job Peter.

“When I reached the ramp at the far end I turned to look back and saw the blocks acted as gigantic garden walls cupping a green bowl in which grew some of the biggest plane trees I’ve ever seen […]And rearing out of the centre was the dusty brown crenellate spike of Skygarden Tower.
‘Fuck me,’ I said to Toby. ‘We’re living in Isengard.’”

It's been a while since I read the earlier books in the series, and it's taking me a bit to remember and get my bearings, but I'm also remembering why I liked the series.

“When you’re a young copper, the old sweats like to scare you with the horrors of the Job. Eviscerated motorists, bloated floaters and little old ladies who had ended their days as a protein supplement for their house cats were common themes.”

I'm nearing the end of this one. I have read all four one after the other and intend to carry on until I catch up with the series. They are such fun. As a reader you have to suspend belief and just go with the flow but the author's knowledge of the workings of the MET and the geography of London are really impressive. I don't think I will review each book but suffice it to say I am totally hooked on these.

“‘The book hasn’t been reported stolen’ I said. ‘As far as Arts and Antiques are concerned there’s no crime to investigate.’ […]
‘Curious,’ said Postmartin. ‘Perhaps the owner doesn’t realize it’s been stolen.’
‘Perhaps the owner is the guy who tried to sell it,’ I said. ‘He might want it back.’
Postmartin gave me a horrified look…”
