Status Updates From لمن أشكو كآبتي

I read it first in English and then in Arabic and I’ve enjoyed both of them. I plan on reading more of Chekhov’s work in the future.

Between the apathy and the outright abuse, Iona is left in that familiar place; where one is surrounded by people, yet so terribly lonely. And he’s aching to talk to someone, to tell them all about it“Just as the young man had been thirsty for water, he thirsts for speech.” But his only solace was his little mare.

I read this (almost) on a whim after stumbling across its title—which is very beautiful. I thought that the first Russian work I’d read would be by Dostoyevsky or Tolstoy (their shorter works for starters). Chekhov wrote loneliness brilliantly. We watch Iona Potapov stumbles through a world that is not his anymore, where his son was taken and he still lingers.
