With the superstition of a lover, Orland had made out that it was on the sixth stroke that she would come … The passionate and feeling heart of Orlando knew the truth … The whole world seemed to ring with the news of her deceit and his derision … He was bitten by a swarm of snakes, each more poisonous than the last … (At last) The river had gained its freedom in the night.

Poor Orlando. From existential dread to a romantic betrayal (that he lowkey deserved) and now becoming bored with every facet of life.
Woolf writes this in such an interesting way because she keeps breaking the fourth wall and it makes my engagement with this not so easy. Although I suppose that’s my fault as I think this is supposed to be a biography?
