Yes, I'm reading this again. It's one of my comfort series.

Oh yeah, I stopped reading Lisa Shearin because her main characters are annoying. And Shearin is very repetitive. Can't let the readers forget what's going on.

Nothing original, rather normal, down to earth protagonist.

Why don't I like this more than I do? Figuring that out is very important.

I've assigned myself the homework of tearing apart a bunch on traditionally published urban fantasy novels to see what makes them tick. This paperback was on my shelf, so here we go. Chapter one: narrator tells us a lot about herself and how magic works in this world, in first person exposition. Narrator finds a dead body at end of chapter---inciting incident?

So far, the rating is reminiscent of Seanan McGuire, and it’s easy to see why she lists this as one of her founding influences in the genre of urban fantasy.

I think people we're lying to me on the reviews, the books is actually very good. Sure, it doesn't have the same level of snark as the prequel, but I think the author was trying to be careful and very informative in her world building.

Despite all the reviews saying that the book isn't as good as the prequel, I am going to give it a try in hopes that the series will improve throughout.

After an interesting prequel, this one sucks eggs. Not the book but the main character. She is a prude and at 24, that's just stupid to me. It doesn't matter that she is from a small southern town, strip clubs shouldn't be a taboo. Mac annoyed me so much in this book, I stopped.

I'm enjoying it!

Tuesday is the new book release date! Time for the prep reading.

There's something just not sitting right with this one... my mind keeps wandering off for some reason. It's not that I don't like it - I just can't seem to get into it.

I don't think I've read this....but I'm getting a lot of deja vu moments.
