Status Updates From I, Robot (Robot, #0.1)

NS10 has superiority complex so they warned all robots in advance of the experiment that gamma rays between them and saving a human would kill them; they used IR instead but all other robots couldn’t differentiate but NS10 was trained by humans and could so he went to save the human;

NS2, robots w modified law 1 (they cannot harm humans but are willing to let them be harmed) in this case cuz the job requires minimal gamma exposure; super secret government request and will be destroyed once job is over; one is hiding among 62 others they must find the mole (it was ordered to lose itself and so it did)

It is either lying or it’s convincing the others to not do things it is unable to do

Herbie, mind-reading robot, lies in order to avoid hurting the robotics professionals (law 1 but emotionally) they don’t know how herbie’s abilities came about and only herbie knows but is unable to say because it’ll hurt their egos, but unable to not say because it’ll hurt their research and round and round it goes; Herbie breaks down; there never again was a mind-reading robot

They get caught in cave in, shoot one of the subunits and DV5 snaps back to reality

Normally, each subunit requires no supervision but in emergencies all subunits must be mobilized simultaneously so something goes wrong (arrival of humans decreases DV5’s initiative as humans would give orders)

Using process of elimination they can find out which part of circuit gets extra strained in 6-way order vs a 5-way order

New model DV5 has 6 subunits underneath it’s care, it’s going on missions but not coming back w ore when D and P aren’t around, after subunit says it happens right after an emergency, the men decide to make an emergency and then appear to immediately cease all movement to deduce what is occurring (smart cuz as observers they immediately interfere and can’t see what the robots were doing)

During storm QT1 handles machinery w such precision they figure it was only logical it banned the men from the control room (law 1, they can’t harm humans so don’t let humans mess up the machinery); the men decide to let them have their cult as long as the laws remain and the jobs are done

QTs kneel before Master, QT1 their prophet, bans men from control room but care for them since they took care of the Master before QT

D decides to build another robot to convince QT1 but it argues they only followed instructions

QT model first to express interest in it’s existence, Powell he assembled QT, what space is, where earth is and how QTs will replace humans on stations due to harsh conditions; QT doesn’t believe, says will figure it out itself, it is illogical that a makeshift human could make a finished product robot, cannot create something greater than the creator, so QT must follow the machinery (Master) not the humans

They decide to test law 1 (cannot see harm happen to a human by their inaction) and see if it’ll trump this robot’s drunken rut (it’s being corroded by fumes), P walks into the sun where he needs to be rescued or will bake alive

Old robot saves him and other man demands Speedy to go get selenium from another area asap rocky and it ends the loop

Mercury: Donovan and Powell ride a large old robot to find their missing mining one, Speedy; find him in a loop fighting between law 2 (follow order set by human) and law 3 (avoid danger); in this case law 2 was given casually by one of the men and law 3 is a higher threshold due to the robot model, so it is going back and forth between dangerous fumes from area and then trying to go back and get the selenium

Dr. Cowell is being interviewed about her long history in robotics field

First robot was Robbie, a child’s nanny

Gloria’s mom wants to return the robot cuz her daughter isn’t befriending anyone that’s not Robbie, she won’t be socialized

He saves her and the mom reconsiders
