I'm not going to finish this book. It is poorly written. The sentence structure is all off, the stories jump around, the writing seems childish somehow, and there are too many bible references for me. I think this came out when Gabby was around 18 or 19, and they should have had her write this when she was older.

I am at the part where she is at a meet and she is being pick for an international state meet.

I am at the part where she wants to quit because she thinks she is to busy for gymnastic, but her parents and brother and sister tells her not to give up and keep trying.

Eh.... hard to listen too. Written for first graders....

One interesting fact is Gabby Douglas grew up in a poor family. Many celebrities that we hear about today are from a wealthy family or have had their fame handed down to them. The text says “I grew up in a family in which was barely getting by on the salary of my mother”(194). This quote shows that Gabby was not given her fame, she had to work for it, in which I found so interesting.

Gabby Douglas is Strong. She gave up everything to keep working and to train harder and harder everyday. Gabby was sick once before her qualifying meets and her parents told her to stay home for the few days she was sick. “No! I will not stop training until I get to the Olympic team and one I do I will train twice as hard.” This shows that Gabby is very strong and can powerthrough anything she’s passionant about.

Gabby Douglas is mentally strong. She pulled through tall of her rough time and mental blocks. She could not go to the collage she wanted to if she wanted to go pro so she had to make a huge decision. “I have had the hardest decisions of my life doing gymnastics but it looks like I’ve made the right ones”(138). She did not let these harsh moments get to her when she had to focus on gymnastics.

Gabrielle is passionate. She was willing to leave her family for 2 years to go live with another family so she could train professionally. “When I told my mom she thought it was a joke”(98). It took a lot of passion to do something like move away from your family. Her mother did not agree right away but it took time to get her to agree. This example shows that Gabrielle is passionate about gymnastics.

Gabrielle is very perservirent. If she messes up or can’t get a new skill she never gives up. She uses her mistakes to build on her skills. “What’s the point of practicing if your never put in the effort to do it.”(65). She says this because she practices so hard because she wants to reach her goals and she is passionate about Gymnastics.

Gabrielle was raised with 5 siblings and a poor family. Her mom and dad were trying to figure out what to do but they got divorced. All of the siblings quit their sports so that Gabby could fulfill her dreams of gymnastics. “We know how amazing you are Gabby. That’s why we are doing this.” (45) Her mother said it was okay and signed Gabby up for gymnastics. She was extremely exited for her first gymnastics practice.

Gaby Douglas is grateful. She is grateful because she lives in a non wealthy home but does not complains at all. She does gymnastics at home whenever she can but they don’t have enough money to get gymnastics lessons. At school Gaby would do a gymnastics show at recess and collect money from other kids and her siblings would help. Gaby’s mom found out and was very upset at them.

I really like this book it is an audio book so I can listen to it whenever. It is about Gabrielle Douglas and about her life story in gymnastics. I am not a gymnast but I still really like this book. I have seen the movie so I am comparing whats the same and whats different. I am really liking it so far. This is a great book!

The book is so good and I can relate easily.

So I've listened to Laurie Hernandez, Simone Biles, and Shawn Johnson's memoirs. Listening to Gabby Douglas. The editing is WEIRD. There are no pauses between subjects. Where, in the book, I assume there would be a little space break with asterisks or something, in the audio, they are said in the same breath. It jumps from one subject right into another, and it is MADDENING!

Nog steeds erg leuk om te lezen. Wat minder inspirerend dan Winning Balance van Shawn Johnson, maar toch erg leuk om te lezen. Al denk ik dat dat puur mijn turn-hart is, want als ik objectief naar het boek kijk is het niet echt heel erg goed geschreven. Niet wat je ervan zou verwachten - tot nu toe. Veel sprongen in tijd die geen enkele logische reden hebben. Toch vind ik het leuk om te lezen - want: turnen.

Leuk om te lezen. Het stoort me wel dat ze 'lol' er in hebben gelaten. Ik snap dat het een biografie is en dat haar persoonlijkheid naar voren moet komen, maar dit is een beetje té. Ik ben benieuwd naar de rest.
