A specific teacher response to their writing, the provision for publishing, and the response of other children (when response helps) gradually convince writers that have something worthwhile to say.

The teacher who conducts conferences has a strong appetite for learning; both about the information the child shares, and what such facts reveal about the child and how he writes.

This book is a reflection of a bygone era when the writing folder was what everything else was based around. There's no mention of the writer's notebook in here, and I imagine the revised edition of the book would focus much more on that. Of course, I don't know. I don't have the revised edition to base that against.

I feel like I'm peeking in on the master when I read this. He writes with such certainty about his subject. I remember feeling this way when I watched him speak at Columbia. He was a guest speaker and I was just a teenager on a day trip, but reading this now I feel every bit as outclassed as I did then. He was so brilliant.
