Monday night was chapter-meeting night in Greek Town, and there was a reverent hush in the neighborhood. Decisions and rules and amendments to rules were being developed throughout the area, and it was like a grand corporation manufacturing a variety of brands, all tested, all ready to compete with one another.

Mitch saw Leda's face, and it was strange and unfamiliar. The features fell apart and they would not unite again. There was the wide, sensuous mouth and the nose and the eyes and the chin and they were like pieces of the puzzle that was Leda's face that had not been put together.

Jan had taught her never to say 'Mother.' Leda said 'Jan.' She said 'Oh, God, Jan is getting higher than a kite!' when they were all out on parties like that—Leda and the men who clambered after Jan and Jan with her glass raised and her voice growing shrill. ... Then in the fall, Leda said, 'Take it easy, Jan. Stay sober,' and the train moved away, toward Cranston and college and the house.

I am starting to think this is the most depressing story I have ever read and not in a "break my heart" good way, just in a terrible "the hell is this" way.

It had all blown lip (sic) and left her burned. And Leda had struck the match to the situation. [a typo from the text scan, it must have said "it had all blown up" in the original]

"I suppose you're trying to make the better of the bitter," she said, "but you don't sound very happy."
"Most of it's my own fault," Mitch answered. "It's because of the way I am."
"Look, Mitch! You're a healthy, normal American girl, by Jupiter, and that bunch is from hunger."

This is actually part of my Patricia Highsmith binge. Spring Fire was a pulp paperback by her one-time lover Marijane Meaker, who had it published in 1952. That was the same year that Highsmith's "The Price of Salt" aka "Carol" was released. As opposed to Highsmith's more optimistic relationship, Meaker's goes down the road of repression and tragedy.

So woah about Charlie because apparently he's a Jesus freak creep. He probably would conflate being raped with consenting to it. He blames the training with purity.
Worse he'd probably not nongynophiliac as much as homophobic. I think Leda encouraged the match with Charlie due to thinking Charlie was closeted gay instead.
Also holy shit about assimilationism being tied to PIV.
So much political lesbian influence

Lucifer, the Shelly poem, the silverware, don't trust Leda, the couple... At this point I'm looking for clues about the doom because this is like summertime sadness & born to die
Dictatorships, the powerful in communities don't care about when rules are broken
Alcohol is a poison & i live dry.
