As with anything of Salinger's, or short stories, it took me an embarrassing amount of time to get through this. That said, I couldn't help being thoroughly amused at his usual overly-frivolous syntax and diction, quizzical descriptions and otherwordly thoughts.

Good lord this guy knew how to write dialogue. This is as far as I've ever read Nine Stories. Last time I stopped after "Bananafish". I think my logic at the time was that JDS couldn't possibly top that one. So far I am loving it.

Ever read Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events?" Well, there's a character in "The Ersatz Elevator" named Esme Squalor...and in Salinger's "Nine Stories," there's a story entitled "For Esme-With Love and Squalor." Mind=Blown. I have a new mission in life: to figure out each of those references.

I feel like I'm updating a lot right now, but I'm doing it at the end of every story because I'm bored in the car.

There is just something about Salinger's writing style that makes me anxious.

What I unwrapped when I got home from Deerfield Library's "Blind Date with a Book" promotion - I am feeling so lucky!! Have only read Catcher prior to this (of course, not much else Salinger to digest) - anyway, am truly enjoying this collection of stories so far and I'm not usually into short story compilations. Mostly they have a few good stories and the rest are tripe. But in this, each is better than the last!
