William Thirsk-Gaskill was born in Leeds, England in 1967. He studied chemistry at the University of Liverpool, where he also contributed to a fanzine called 'Dregs'.

He took up writing seriously when he enrolled with the Open University in 2009.

William has contributed to a project to encourage emerging writers, called Grist, run from the University of Huddersfield. He led the performance of the Grist poets at the 2012 Ted Hughes festival. He is one of only a few authors to contribute both poetry and short fiction to Grist.

For 5 years, he co-presented a monthly programme of poetry and music with the poet, Gaia Holmes. The programme was called Themes for Dreamers and broadcast from Halifax, England.
