I bought the first 9 books of this series last year on Will Wight’s birthday when he was giving them away for free, and in that time I had heard several of my fellow bloggers jumping on the wagon to read this series and loving it. I finally made it a priority to read this year in 2022, and I must say that I’m very glad that I did because this is a very exciting read and listen, because Travis Baldree does an outstanding job with his voices and narrating the story!

This is basically an origin story, coming of age of Lindon of the Wei clan as he tries to learn magic. He as the title explains, is unsouled, meaning he cannot train under any of the 4 magic styles: the Enforcers, the Strikers, the Rulers and the Forgers. He is basically the lowest of the low. If you’re into shows like Naruto, this is the book series for you because it has a lot of those same elements within the story. I however, have never watched any of those types of shows, but I think I’m going to have to now, because this series is making me a fan. What I really like about Lindon is that he is a weak character with a lot of heart. He has that same quality of Steve Rogers before he became Captain America.

I really enjoyed all of the wisdom quotes scattered throughout the book. It reminded me of when I read Never Die by Rob J Hayes, I had so many quotes written down that I didn’t know which ones to use, so I just used all of them. This has that same essence to it because of the beautiful Asian mythology that it’s tied to. I also keep a few of these quotes for myself as well as it helps me grow personally. I would suggest in doing the same!

I think the only issue I had was at the beginning where it just did a massive info dump, but that’s mainly because this is such a short book that it doesn’t get to slowly tell that information in an organic manner since the story progresses pretty quickly. With that said, it is still worthy of 5 stars and was excellent read that laid a lot of groundwork for the rest of the series. I can see why this series is so loved and I cannot wait to jump into the rest of the series in March, after #FebruarySheWrote. ...more "
