C. L. Roth is an artist, caregiver, and author. She's spent twenty-five years learning her crafts. She spent a year writing articles for her local newspaper. A job that taught her to write tight and meet her deadlines.

She is a full-time caregiver for her son. Joshua was born with cerebral palsy but much to C. L.'s surprise indicated a love of art and has become a very talented watercolor and acrylic artist. C. L. manages Our Home Studio which showcases her son's artwork as well as rare pieces of her own work.

I hit patches where I don't want to do the work. And there are days when the words don't flow. But I always know the story. I am a student of Holly Lisle. She has some of the best online classes out there. From her, I learned about scene cards.

Scene cards are the #1 tool that took me from a want-to-be story teller to published author status. Certain genres of books have certain lengths. I know a Middle Grade story is going to be shorter than an adult mystery. I know that adult fantasy books are going to be longer than adult mysteries.

I know how long my chapters usually run. For the sake of easy math I round it off. My chapters average out at 2000 words, give or take a few. I know I want my MG books to come in at 45,000-50,000 words. I shoot for 45,000 and that gives me room to add a bit if I find it necessary.

I know to fill 45,000 words I'm going to need 22/23 scenes. I write down my story premise. I start to fill in the scene cards. My card can only hold one sentence, no more than 30 words. If I can't condense the scene into that amount of words, I don't know my scene well enough.

So I fill out cards. If I can get even 2/3 of them full I know I can write the story. If they are all filled, I know I have an action filled story. I always know when I sit down at the computer what card I'm working on that day.

The writing might not flow. Some days it does, some days it doesn't. But I can work. No story is ever written in one sitting. It gets redrafted, edited, reread and reworked. I know how to string words together. When I'm done, the reader will never know which words came easy and which ones I sweat blood over. They can't tell. So I don't worry when the day is slow. I just keep typing, knowing I'll smooth it out during one of the editing passes. (less)

I like creating worlds and characters. It's my story. That's almost magical. I was intimidated by the business aspect of the journey until I realized its a big game. It's like opening a board of strategy. Once I realized that, it took a lot of the fear out of me. So I miss a turn. Big deal, I'll roll the dice again.

I have a verbal mind and an artistic one. Writing stories is hugely entertaining. If I could sell them, then the magic would be complete.(less)

Too Old to Dream

When does one cease to dream?

When I grow too old to dream has long been a musical
mantra for me. My golden ring on the merry-go-round, the carrot on the end of
the stick.

When life seems too hard to bear, sliding into a daydream
passes the time and soothes my nerves. But lately, sliding to another reality
has gotten difficult. It’s harder to turn the switch from the stressful ‘now’
to ‘anywhere but her
