The main character, Ellen Degeneres is such a funny charismatic person and it really shows even through her writing. I would absolutely love to be friends with her. Even as a stranger she makes me laugh and I would be so over joyed if she talked to me in person. I absolutely love her show and she's so caring and generous and so full of energy. The seemingly random topics provide so much insight into her life and what she has had to experience, funny or not. She really seems off the wall but I'm sure she's really down to Earth when you get to know her; Exactly like me!

Our relationship would work because, like her, I thoroughly enjoy rambling and going on and on about nonsensical things. Also, I'm pretty sure she'd have a fun time interviewing me considering I'd start chattering away and when I get too confused she would make fun of my cluelessness. I also enjoy telling stories, and I am pretty sure she does too considering she has many stories to tell. Sure I'm not muchc of a people person and I wouldn't have as much composure when something funny happens but I feel as if we could be great friends.

Checkpoint 2, Question 4
As a talk show host, lesbian, vegan animal lover, and Cover Girl among other things, Ellen gets labeled quite a lot. "The problem with labels is that they lead to stereotypes and stereotypes lead to generalizations and generalizations lead to assumptions and assumptions lead back to stereotypes. It's a vicious cycle..." (93). Ellen writes about a specific stereotype about lesbians that deals with how many cats you have. Apparently if you own three cats, that automatically makes you a lesbian. So if you're lesbian but don't have a cat does that make you abnormal?

Why does it matter? When she came out there were groups that didn't think she was gay enough and there were groups that thought she was too gay. Is there a definite line between gay and too gay? Who cares anyways. She's happy with how gay she is and that's how she's going to live. If you constantly live by people's judgments and notions, you won't be able to be yourself. Ellen says though that if she had to labeled she would be "like the girl a few doors down" (95). She's not that different from anyone else. ...more "
