Mark S. Bacon began his career as a Southern California newspaper police reporter, one of his crime stories becoming key evidence in a murder case that spanned decades.

After working for two newspapers, he moved to advertising and marketing and became a copywriter for Knott’s Berry Farm, the large theme park down the freeway from Disneyland. Experience working at Knott’s formed part of the inspiration for his creation of Nostalgia City theme park.

If you love writing, consider that while you’re working on the Great American Novel, you can still be a professional writer by creating other things such as advertising, commercial websites, public relations, speeches, technical manuals/instructions, direct mail, annual reports, ghost writing projects and lots more.

A writer is someone who starts with a blank screen or sheet of paper and produces something that communicates clearly. (less)

While I was in the middle of writing my second Nostalgia City mystery I got a call from authorities in Los Angeles. I was asked to testify at a murder trial based on a news story I'd written as a reporter decades ago.

I did testify at the trial of a person who was already serving a life sentence for his participation in a kidnap and murder. But the DA took him out of jail to prosecute him for a murder that happened prior to his other conviction.

Literally I could have written a book about the case, the suspect and his family. Too much to tell here. At the time I had a contract for the book I was writing and I was only halfway through it. I made lots of contacts and wrote many pages of notes, but I decided to stick with fiction rather than true crime. (less)

“Whose idea was it to replace the chrome knobs and push buttons on car radios with 'touch screens'?”
Mark S. Bacon, Death in Nostalgia City

“North of Las Vegas, desert and mountainous scrub land stretches for hundreds of miles. The earth still bears the scars from above-ground nuclear bomb tests at Yucca Flats, the flash of mushroom clouds visible from the early Las Vegas casinos. Secret tests of another sort take place in Area 51, the Air Force’s clandestine base and sprawling testing facility shrouded in mystery and baked by an unrelenting sun. In the 450 miles between Vegas and Reno, ghost towns slowly crumble, Great Basin rattlesnakes hunt for rodents, and US Highway 95 stretches up and down the arid landscape, connecting the state’s only two metropolitan areas.”
Mark S. Bacon, Desert Kill Switch: Nostalgia City Mystery ~ Book 2
