Anthony J Melchiorri is a scientist with a PhD in bioengineering. Originally from the Midwest, he now lives in Texas. By day, he develops cellular therapies and 3D-printable artificial organs. By night, he writes apocalyptic, medical, and science-fiction thrillers that blend real-world research with other-worldly possibility. When he isn't in the lab or at the keyboard, he spends his time running, reading, hiking, and traveling in search of new story ideas.

However, most of this research is still relegated to laboratories.

Researchers first delved into gene therapy in the 1970's and the first FDA-approved clinical trial happened in 1990. However, this research has faced numerous challenges. These obstacles include overcoming the body's natural immune response to gene delivery, the possibility of causing tumors, problems with the vector used to deliver the genes, and the stability and long-term effectiveness of the therapeutic gene.

In the book, Chris also uses DNA as a material. That is, he uses it to construct the tiny, tiny delivery vectors - or transport packages - to better evade the body's immune system when delivering therapeutics (or black market enhancements) to a person's cells. DNA as a material is currently being explored (though not quite as I described in the book) and researchers are using it to deliver specific therapeutic proteins.

That's a rough overview, still filled with jargon, so feel free to follow up with other questions for clarification. I'd be glad to provide links to information from experts in the field, too!(less)

What’s in a name? The Tide: Deadrise

Let’s be honest. Deadrise is the perfect name for a zombie-esque apocalyptic novel. Now in The Tidethe dead aren’t being reanimated like your typical Zed fest. Stillit’s a damn cool name, and I love it, but there’s something more to the name than a simple reference to reanimated corpses.

As some of you know, I spent the better part of five years living and working in Maryland a short drive away f

“There wasn’t going to be any dramatic rescue if we screwed this up. My best, closest opportunity for help was a criminal overlord sitting in my ship with my plant-based AI. Not super reassuring.”
Anthony J. Melchiorri, Spectral Prey

“But my grandpa, one of the Greatest Generation, always told me a brave man isn’t unafraid. He just knows how to look fear in the face and say, ‘screw it.”
Anthony J. Melchiorri, Sunken Spaceship

“Our situation reminded me of a quote I’d heard before: “The winner of a knife fight is the one that dies in the ambulance instead of on the street.”
Anthony J. Melchiorri, Final Crucible
