I grew up in my younger years on Air Force bases across the United States. In fact, I was actually "made in Taiwaan," but born in America. My parents were strong Christians who were always deeply involved in church. My dad always taught Bible studies or Sunday School classes, and my mom is a true prayer warrior. So, I started with a deeper understanding of the Scriptures than most people.

Then in college I was deeply influenced by the Navigator ministry. After college, I spent some time with Crusade and even spent two years as a missionary with them in Ukraine. I attended a really strong church as well, which significantly helped me in my knowledge of the Word. For more than a decade now, I've been involved with ministry to international stu

So, Christianity and the Bible were completely new to them. If you talked about God and then mentioned Jesus, the connection wasn't obvious to them. So, how do you introduce such people to the Bible?

Well, starting at the beginning seems like a good place to start, and that's what I would do. I would walk with them through the first chapters of Genesis, as they are foundational to everything else.

I began to imagine what it would be like to select about 25 chapters from the Old Testament and 25 from the New and show how they weaved together into one grand story. I have notes from as far back as 2013 about what those 50 chapters could be, so the idea likely originated earlier than that. It slowly became a dream--to write something that would help people see the beauty of the Gospel in the Scriptures from cover to cover.

However, I'm a web developer by trade--not a writer--so who would ever read a book written by me? And how could "I" ever write an entire book? The task seemed way too daunting to me, but the idea did not go away.

Finally, in December of 2019, right after Christmas, I dove in, not knowing where the journey would lead me or if I would even finish.

After several weeks, however, I had completed a solid rough draft, but then it sat for a while. After a few months, I picked it up again and began revising and rewriting it. Eventually, I mentioned the book to my parents. My mom, of course, asked to read it immediately, and I sent her a copy.

Yes, she thought it was the greatest thing ever. After all, she is the one who hung my pitiful kindergarten artwork on the refrigerator and looked at it with admiration every time she opened the door. Yet, she really did say that it was a great read independent of her affection for me.

Next, she asked to give a copy to a lady in her church who was really hungry for the word. I also got really positive feedback from her. Then I mentioned it to a long-time friend of mine who suggested I let his wife read it. He spent a few minutes raving about how wonderful and exceptional his wife was in everything, and how she would also be great at reviewing a book. A few days later, he texted me and suggested I call his wife to see what she though, so I did. She was also very positive and enthusiastic. I really needed this encouragement.

I joined a Facebook group for Christian writers and got some pointers and suggestions. After using Grammarly (the free version) a bit and also incorporating feedback from others, I was ready to take the next step. But, I'm a web developer, so I didn't really know what the next step was.

Someone from the Facebook group said I needed to get a professional manuscript critique, so I googled "Christian Book Manuscript Critique." I found a small Christian publisher that offered one for free. That was just barely in my budget, so I submitted it.

What I expected to receive back was help on what I should add, subtract, multiply and divide. What I received was a brief critique that was fairly positive. However, they also indicated that they would be interested in publishing it as well.

So, that's where the idea for the book arose, and that's how it got published!(less)

“God does not respond well when anyone prevents others from worshiping Him.”
John Pasquet, The Essence: A Guided Journey of Discovery through the Bible

“It isn't Narnia, you know," sobbed Lucy. "It's you. We shan't meet you there. And how can we live, never meeting you?"
"But you shall meet me, dear one," said Aslan.
"Are -are you there too, Sir?" said Edmund.
"I am," said Aslan. "But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”
C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
