“अब रहीं चार विद्याएँ, उनके नाम हैं–मीमांसा, तर्क, पुराण और धर्म। मीमांसा का अर्थ है किसी विषय को सभी उचित, अनुचित अंगों सहित स्पष्ट करना, उसकी गहराई तक पहुँचना, उसका सर्वांगीण विश्लेषण करना। मीमांसा के दो भेद हैं–पूर्व मीमांसा और उत्तर मीमांसा। और जिसमें न्याय-अन्याय की चर्चा की गयी है, वह है तर्कविद्या।”

“इन वेदों के छह अंग हैं। उनको भी छह स्वतन्त्र विद्याएँ माना गया है। पहले अंग को ‘शिक्षा’ कहते हैं। ‘शिक्षा’ अर्थात् वेदों के शब्दों के निर्दोष, योग्य और कर्ण-मधुर उच्चारण का शास्त्र। वेदों की वास्तविक सामर्थ्य उसके अचूक और स्पष्ट उच्चारण में निहित है। उच्चारण के अर्थात् वाणी के चार भेद हैं–परा, पश्यन्ती, मध्यमा, और वैखरी।”
