When I pre-plan, even if I deviate, it gives me a place to start and that reduces any writer's block. Sometimes, I have something very loose in mind for a scene and I just need to think about it for a few minutes before I start. I find that any difficulty always goes away after ten minutes of typing.(less)

I imagine it will change over time. For now, it's the opportunity for a more harmonious daily focus for me. I spend my free time immersed in pop-culture entertainments and when I write it feels like a natural process to "recycle" my interests into new works. When I've been at other jobs, I've not found the same harmony. For instance, I might go home after a day of dealing with video engineering problems and then read a comic book. It just doesn't reinforce my skills in the same way. In essence, my past-times are useful as a writer, while in any other job capacity, they are just distractions. Additionally, I can even have a lousy day as a writer and use those feelings for a story. That harmony is the best part for me.(less)
