That's possibly because I'm lucky, but I don't think so. Too many other writers whom I respect say that they don't believe in it either.

The key - at least for me - seems to be always thinking about stories and writing. I don't wait until I'm at the keyboard; I'm taking in inspiration and thinking about it all the time: in the car, in the shower, before I fall asleep. By the time I sit to write, I already know more or less what I want to say (though it's important and fun to leave room for surprises!).(less)

But the best part is when I've written "The End" on a final draft and know that I've created something that I'd want to buy and read even if I hadn't written it.(less)

Barron's version of Austen is always a great, funny, observant, courageous detective, so she and her supporting cast and all of the historical details that Barron includes are enough to keep me interested. But some of the books have had stretches in which I was eager to get back to the investigati Read more of this blog post »

I still love Brereton's art and the Nocturnals character designs are all super cool, but I also still have problems with the storytelling. Mostly around the pace and the dialogue. The story rushes through scenes that should be emotional. And I can te ...more

It kills me to be disappointed enough in a Shirley Jackson book that I decided not to finish it. But while all of her books look side-eyed at the world (and I love that about them), The Sundial is in Extreme Satire mode. Either that or the characters ...more
