Wes Moore’s writing style and the topic made me more interested in the book. The book contains the differences between growth with money and growth without money, and there were pages with pictures for more details. The description of Wes Moore (Prisoner) shows the reader the reality of people from the poor part of Baltimore. Because the book contains the differences in growth, I made a number of connections between the book and the reality of poor people that I never thought about.

The characteristics differed from the author Wes Moore and the prisoner Wes Moore. If the author Wes’ characteristic was more like trying to understand others, the prisoner Wes Moore was more like having force envolve to make others do something. Therefore, when the prisoner Wes’ brother Tony asked where he got the money, he punched Wes. “Tony’s fists were clenched and his jaw tense as he eyed his little brother up and down." (TOWM P. 69) Because Tony was a part of drug dealing where there a lot of forces involved, he ended up beating up his brother Wes, and feeling like the situation is normal. However, the author Wes’ case was different. The author Wes’ parents moved with Wes starting from the poor side of New York to a better place. The parents wanted Wes to have a good education and wanted him to build his social skills.

Before I came to the states, I never knew anything about drugs and how people do drug dealing because it is not allowed in Korea. I have never seen any drugs like marijuana, or weed but it seems like to me that the drugs are just everywhere in some poor places. Young people like Wes are being exposed to drugs and just by being exposed to these environments, it is natural to do drugs and do drug dealings. Furthermore, I realized that the reality of the poor people actually get on drugs and it becomes a crucial part of their life. However, because Korea does not have a huge gap between rich people and poor people with a 0 percent chance of owning any drugs or guns, I never did and had to think about it. ...more "

Overall, I really enjoyed Montana 1948 by Larry Watson. The book shows the growth from being naive to being fully mature. I liked how the story is based on an event that happened when the author was young, and the thought about the same event was different. Therefore, there are a lot of parentheses showing his thought in certain situations, which makes the book more interesting because there are two different perspectives from the same person. Furthermore, the recurring theme makes the reader be more focused on it, which can lead him or her to have different interpretations with a clear understanding of why he or she came up with that specific idea.

There is a theme that occurs throughout the chapter many times, but with the different personalities of the main character. One of the main characters, David, was a young child at the beginning of the book. He forgets important events after a while and thinking that life is a movie where there are good guys wearing white shirts and bad guys wearing black shirts shooting like cowboys. “I could have used all that ammunition to improve my marksmanship, aiming carefully at my targets and slowly squeezing off at a time, but I didn’t. Instead, I tried to see how fast I could fire off a whole clop, shooting into the ground just to see the dirt fly. When I had a target, I often fired at it from the hip threw a hasty shot as I was whirling around. Most of the time I missed.” (P. 72) He thought to be cool and fancy was the most important thing, and he does try to shoot like a cowboy shooting their gun from the hip, with bad aim and missing almost all of his target. However, he mentally grows throughout the book. He learns what is important, what is valuable and learns the skill of picking value over desire. “This wasn’t the first time I had killed something and it wouldn’t be the last… I felt the way I often did, that extraordinary mixture of power and sadness, exhilaration and fear. But there was something new. I felt strangely calm… I needed that… I hadn’t even known it but I needed do kill something. The events, the discoveries, the secrets of the past few days- Marie’s illness, Uncle Frank’s sins, the tension between my father and mother - had excited something in me that wasn’t released until I shot a magpie out of a piñon pine.” David got a weird feeling of being extremely calm, and after this event, in any kind of situation, he calms himself down and shows maturity.

I really recommend this book to everyone. Even though the book can be understood in many different ways, it still teaches the same lesson. The first lesson teaches the reader how important it is to learn to grow up mentally from a boy to a man. David is typically childish at the beginning of the book because he is a child, but by the end of the book, he becomes the man who can talk about a heavy subject. For example, in this quote, he discusses what could have been done to stop the bad event. Furthermore, it teaches the reader the changes after growing mentally. The book gives the example of David being trustworthy and reliable. Because Montana 1948 teaches life lessons, it will help the reader how to be mature. ...more "
