Merritt Daniel McDowell, writing as M., is an ink-stained wretch from the Rust Belt living on the East Coast of the United States, who has never gotten comfortable living so close to shore, for beyond those coastal waters, there indeed be dragons.

Merritt can reliably be found in pursuit of caffeination at nearly all times of day, up to and including roughly thirty minutes before it is time for bed.

I mostly read books about places that are distinctly Not Here, and most of them are kind of dreadful in their own ways. My first childhood imaginary homes were in the World of Two Moons from Elfquest, and Earthsea from Ursula K Le Guin's wonderful series; I could probably visit with some old friends thereabouts.(less)

Anniversary Time!

It's been a year since this book first splashed onto the scene, a wild year of weird hopes and old dreams fulfilled.

I turned forty. I got married. I rode a lot of roller coasters; certainly more of them than last year. I wrote a whole second book after this one, in that time, and the third is roving out, here and there, whether I want to be working on it yet or not.

Kharise wants to be heard,

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
“All men have stars, but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems... But all these stars are silent. You-You alone will have stars as no one else has them... In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars will be laughing when you look at the sky at night..You, only you, will have stars that can laugh! And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me... You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me. And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure... It will be as if, in place of the stars, I had given you a great number of little bells that knew how to laugh”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

Cormac McCarthy
“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.”
Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men

Stephen King
“If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”
Stephen King

Frank Bidart
“then the voice in my head said

WHETHER YOU LOVE WHAT YOU LOVE

OR LIVE IN DIVIDED CEASELESS
REVOLT AGAINST IT

WHAT YOU LOVE IS YOUR FATE ”
