Eventually, at the urging of my longtime friend, author Autumn Cornwell, I decided to write and self-publish a serialized, four part Young Adult novel that I called WILF. Later, I rewrote WILF, combining all four volumes into one very hefty novel and renaming it THIS PLACE FAR AWAY. My newest book, THE DOWNFRONTERS, is a ...more

3,001 ENTRIES, 25 WINNERS & A NEW GIVEAWAY

Wow! Thank you to everybody who entered to win a paperback copy of THE DOWNFRONTERS. The contest ended up with 3,001 entries--far more than my books have ever received in the past. (I'll confess, I stayed up until midnight, wondering if we'd make it to 3,000! I think we hit that number at about 11:57 p.m. It was a nail-biter!) I really appreciate your interest.

Congratulations to the winners (who c Read more of this blog post »

“The tight dress she'd put on was white with a pattern of green vines. Seeing Mavis in it reminded Wilf of a statue he'd once found behind a garden hedge. That pale, marble woman, stuck outside, all by herself, had been covered with ivy. He'd felt so sorry for her. It must have taken a long time for all of those green, leafy ropes to wrap themselves around her. He still wondered, didn't anybody look out for her? Take care of her? Didn't she matter to anyone?”

“The front door was built into a round turret. She'd never entered a home - or any other building - through a turret before and it made her feel like something special was about to happen.”

“He used to watch her running in races against her girlfriends, with her hair bouncing against her back. She always ran with such determination. Even then, he could tell that she wasn't one of those silly, smiley girls. But when she did smile it took his breath away.”

“And then she got a bad, bad feeling because she realized she had been wrong.
You can fool a person.
You can fool a dog.
You can fool a cat or a horse or a teacher or a friend.
But you cannot ever fool a heart.”
Barbara O'Connor, Greetings from Nowhere

“Non calor sed umor est qui nobis incommodat.
It's not the heat, it's the humidity.”
Autumn Cornwell, Carpe Diem

“But Milo had a shiny gold present to open, and presents trumped sad trees any day of the week.”
Kate Milford, Greenglass House

“You'd think that a redheaded boy with glasses who was named Howard and had an up-down walk would have a lot more to wish for than being friends with me. But I admit I felt a smile on my face and hope in my heart, 'cause maybe wishes really do come true. Maybe some wishes just take longer than others.”
Barbara O'Connor, Wish

“My eye was drawn to a bright green hue, the same shade as a poisonous Amazonian frog, the tiny, delightfully deadly ones.”
Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
