I have a bachelor's in writing and a master's in literature, which has created a real dislike for purely academic and educational interpretations of literary works. A book is good not because it meets some literary requirement, can be analyzed to death, or whatever, but because you enjoy it when you start, you enjoy it while reading it, and when you're done with it you still enjoy it. The best books are those that make you feel better when you reach the end, regardless of whether or not they survive "the test of time." I've read and enjoyed books from just about every genre, and believe that a good story with good characters (even ones you enjoy not liking) is the best kind of story.

I'm a fan of Joseph Campbell, though I find his books har

Go Ahead, Laugh!

We are meant to laugh. At a bare minimum, we should laugh every day. A couple times a day wouldn't be bad either. Why? Well, without getting too technical, it's because our bodies and minds are better when we laugh. You can read all the studies about endorphins and stress release, people being healed through laughter, and even about the laughing clubs that exist (yes, really). But you really don't Read more of this blog post »

Steven’s Recent Updates

Bad Bishop by L.J. Shen
"The audiobook is a MUST!!!!!!!

I have not cared for L.J. Shen's books in the past, but I am always willing to give authors another try and I'm so glad I did!!!!

Also, the "cheating" isn't really cheating IMO. I won't go in to details, but it's just not" Read more of this review »

“The stories told by ancient peoples from which we are descended have managed to put into pleasant and entertaining words what we’ve been repeating ever since in living rooms, courts, churches, and therapy sessions. The “life tips” that we seek have been there for us all along.”
Steven Gregory

“The fight is not always to the strongest nor the race always to the swiftest. And even if the playing field is not level, the "little guy" is going to win every now and again.”
Steven Gregory

“I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself.”
Aldous Huxley, Point Counter Point

“All that happens means something; nothing you do is ever insignificant.”
Aldous Huxley, Crome Yellow

“Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities.”
Aldous Huxley

“Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens, or half their greatness goes unnoticed. It is all part of the fairy tale.”
Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn

“When I was alive, I believed — as you do — that time was at least as real and solid as myself, and probably more so. I said 'one o'clock' as though I could see it, and 'Monday' as though I could find it on the map; and I let myself be hurried along from minute to minute, day to day, year to year, as though I were actually moving from one place to another. Like everyone else, I lived in a house bricked up with seconds and minutes, weekends and New Year's Days, and I never went outside until I died, because there was no other door. Now I know that I could have walked through the walls. (...) You can strike your own time, and start the count anywhere. When you understand that — then any time at all will be the right time for you.”
Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn
