Maybe the best piece of American fiction I have ever read. 19th century American West is so far from my life experience that I found myself wanting to see the places I was reading about - to pick up with a bed roll and sleep under a sky full of stars. And to take enough happiness from that “ to carry me over the low feelings that come to all men” Not that there weren’t dangers....McMurtry paints a pretty compelling picture of the American Cowboy for those of us who won’t get a whole lot closer than a backyard fire pit.
