Within the first few pages the author already uses good description to help the reader stay interested. Thomas is awakened by a man “he had no hair, only disease splotches of what looked like greenish moss. A vicious slit stretched across his right cheek.” (Dashner 7) This man has been through terrible things that the reader doesn’t even know about yet, and this description is intriguing to the reader and keeps them wanting to read more. The author also has the characters acting in ways that a normal person would react, making the story relatable to a certain extent and people wanting to read more. They decided to go through a door that had been locked to see what they would find. When they entered the room they discovered about a dozen people hanging from the ceiling, and Thomas reaction was “He dropped to his knees” and all Minho could say was “Woah.” (Dashner 13) If an average person were to come across the same situation, they would react the same way, so having their characters like this makes the story better. The way that the author writes and uses different types of language, shows that this will be a good and interesting story.
Thomas is a strong and brave character that shows a lot of perseverance through out the book with all of the hard things that he faces. Even though "At that moment, everything in the world just sucked," (Dashner 28) he was able to get through it and still work together with the others to get things figured out. Thomas is put under a lot of stress and confusing things, but he is always able to preserver through it and fight on.
In the book, The Scorch Trials, one of the most common and important themes is friendship and trust. Being in this tough and confusing situation that they were already in made it difficult to figure things out. When there was a new boy that joined and had been through the same things they had, they needed to know all that he knew, but “One thing he knew was the kid would never open up if Minho terrified him.” (24 Dashner) Thomas and Aris’ friendship grew over time and it helped grow their trust to figure things out. As the book went on his friends that he had always trusted were starting to make him question if they were really that good of friends. It was Thomas, Theresa and Aris, but the two of them were starting to turn on Thomas, “Two people who every instinct had told him were his friends. Until now.” (290 Dashner) He realized that they were not his good friends anymore and they were hard to trust. The message of trust and friendship is valuable because it is needed in tough times to get through things. Theresa was talking to Thomas through their minds, and saying that she was in trouble and needed his help, but “Could he trust her? She’d lied to him so much already.” (357 Dashner) In confusing times like this it is hard to decide if someone is being fake, but you don’t want to put yourself at risk of them hurting you anymore. Friendship and trust is an important thing for not only books, but in life also....more
