This fucking book. THIS FUCKING BOOK. This book deserves every ounce of hype surrounding it. EVERY BIT.

You know how you put off reading a book for a while because you just KNOW it’s going to break you a little bit? The kind of book that you can’t read fast enough and you’re flying through the pages, while simultaneously dreading the ending because then it will be over and you’re just left staring at the wall contemplating EVERYTHING? Yeah that’s this book. I read this book in a day and a half, unable to put it down. It’s one of those stories that reminded me why I fell in love with reading, sucking me in from the very first chapter. It also gave me the biggest book hangover I’ve had since I finished the TOG series. Like I finished it 12 minutes ago and I’m already planning a reread. Today. I’m going to reread it today. I’ve read hundreds of books, but have never felt the need to write a review to sort out my feelings. Until this book. Dramatic? Yes. True? Also yes.

The book follows Violet as she fights to survive Basgiath War College and earn her place as a dragon rider. She uses every trick in her arsenal to survive against the odds. Which would be a whole lot easier if she didn’t have a target on her back for being too “small and frail” and, oh yeah, the youngest daughter of General Sorrengail - the woman responsible for the execution of many cadets traitorous parents. It would also be easier if one of those cadets wasn’t Xaden Riorsen, one of the most powerful and ruthless wingleaders the college has seen. Did I mention he's HER wingleader? Enter: Enemies to Lovers trope

This book is everything I wanted. It gave me elements of all the series I grew up on as a kid. The academic atmosphere reminecsent of Hogwarts. The life or death trials of Hunger Games and Divergent. The bond between rider and dragon from Eragon. Not to mention the found family trope between the cadets in Fourth Wing. Their banter had me grinning ear to ear and laughing out loud.
Yarros had me on the edge of my seat the entire last 20% of the book, my pulse LITERALLY skyrocketing from Chapter 36 on. Violet is smacked right in the face with new revelations, even as it starts clicking into place for the reader. I had my suspicions about the ending, and even as it was confirmed, it still knocked me off my feet. I can’t wait for Iron Flame.

Violet - We love a strong FMC. We love a FMC that doesn’t take any shit. We love Violet. From her sassy inner monologue, to using her wits over brawn, to her compassion for people she doesn’t even know. I love that she will not take no for an answer. She just did what she had to do and she was the embodiment of the concept “Do it scared.” As a person who has suffered from a chronic illness, I adored the representation Yarros gave us. It’s not often you see that in an action packed fantasy book. Violet never complains, never says she’s not good enough to be there. She just finds ways to make it work for her. She fights back against every person who calls her fragile or broken, and shows them exactly how much she deserves her seat at the table. Queen shit.

Xaden - Anyone who says this man wasn’t smitten with our little Violence since day one is LYING. Yes, he had secrets. Yes, he made mistakes. But can we really blame the man for having trust issues? He has some groveling to do, but what’s an enemies to lovers without a little begging? Xaden is strong. He doesn’t just carry the burdens of being wingleader, he carries the burdens of 107 lives as well. But he still shows up for Violet, time and time again. I love when you see how much a person cares through their actions, and he showed us from the beginning. He never doubted Violet, or said she was incapable. He just gave her the weapons she needed to succeed on her own while he stands there right beside her.

Dain - Fuck Dain. We were all thinking it the entire time. It only took a few “Dain reached down and cupped my face” lines for me to get the ick, and a few more to grow suspicious. He might have grown up with her and claimed to be her best friend, but he never SAW Violet. He could never see past her limitations to her strength. Fuck Dain. ...more "
