This book is well written and has an engaging plot. It just has many of the buttons such as rape, wimpy women, poorly developed or stereotypish characters, and cheap emotional shots that annoy me disproportionately. I recommend reading original books ...more

This book had it all in terms of things that make me dislike books. It had characters that I could not care about, it had a setting that took half the book to sort of explain, it had sloppy perspectives and it had jumps in time where decades were ...more

This is by far the best book I have read in a very long time. I loved it! It's an incredibly well paced adventure where the protagonists are just barely staying ahead (mostly) of some really bad guys. There are secrets and mysteries that gradually ...more

I can't recommend this book at all. If you want a better combination of science and entertainment, I suggest reading Rock, Paper, Scissors: Game Theory in Everyday Life, Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage ...more

I would recommend this book to people interested in this type of history. It's not a fun read, but it's important. I definitely knew next to nothing about the Chernobyl disaster and found this book to be educational.

“Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is the belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.”

“Science flies men to the moon, religion flies men into buildings.”

“Common sense is no match for the voice of God.”

Carl Sagan
“Some information is classified legitimately; as with military hardware, secrecy sometimes really is in the national interest. Further, military, political, and intelligence communities tend to value secrecy for its own sake. It's a way of silencing critics and evading responsibility - for incompetence or worse. It generates an elite, a band of brothers in whom the national confidence can be reliably vested, unlike the great mass of citizenry on whose behalf the information is presumably made secret in the first place. With a few exceptions, secrecy is deeply incompatible with democracy and with science.”
Carl Sagan

Richard Dawkins
“It's been suggested that if the super-naturalists really had the powers they claim, they'd win the lottery every week. I prefer to point out that they could also win a Nobel Prize for discovering fundamental physical forces hitherto unknown to science. Either way, why are they wasting their talents doing party turns on television?

By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out.”
Richard Dawkins
