"I started this book while I was already falling asleep last night. I'm so excited cause Murakami is my favorite, I've seen some of the complaints online and I'm like - yo that's what the fans like, in just the first few pages I feel like I'm already in the dream like state his works evokes - I mean I was half asleep, but still - excited" Nov 21, 2024 04:29AM

Caitlin Doughty
“It is worth noting that the main players in the recomposition project are women—scientists, anthropologists, lawyers, architects. Educated women, who have the privilege to devote their efforts to righting a wrong. They’ve given prominent space in their professional careers to changing the current system of death. Katrina noted that “humans are so focused on preventing aging and decay—it’s become an obsession. And for those who have been socialized female, that pressure is relentless. So decomposition becomes a radical act. It’s a way to say, ‘I love and accept myself.”
Caitlin Doughty, From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death

“His forgetfulness feels like carelessness, and his carelessness feels like rejection.”

“After forty-odd years you stop asking," she says. "Want some free advice?"
I nod.
"Don't trip over yourselves trying to be a perfect couple, love. Get out of each other's way; don't be afraid of falling out, shutting up, or telling little porky pies; do your share of the cleaning; don't leave your dirty undies inside out on the carpet; leave the seat down; buy her flowers once a month; and pinch her bum once a week - the rest's up to you.”
Andy Jones, The Two of Us

“We lawyers do not write plain English. We use eight words to say what could be said in two. We use arcane phrases to express commonplace ideas. Seeking to be precise, we become redundant. Seeking to be cautious, we become verbose. Our sentences twist on, phrase within clause within clause, glazing the eyes and numbing the minds of our readers. The result is a writing style that has, according to one critic, four outstanding characteristics. It is (1) wordy, (2) unclear, (3) pompous, and (4) dull.”
Richard C. Wydick, Plain English for Lawyers
