Don't put it off, don't make it into this big scary thing, and don't think that every single word needs to be perfect or inspirational. Just write. I often start using no punctuation and write for pages - getting my thoughts on paper. The perfecting, editing and reflecting comes after. For my students, I say, bring me a 'crap draft'. I would rather see a really rough draft that needs a lot of work, than a blank page. A rough draft has potential, it's a start and we can go forward from there. The second piece of great advice that I use often, is write every day. Even if it's only a paragraph - it keeps the project in the back of your mind. Sometimes the hardest thing about writing can be working on a project when there are a lot of interruptions - it can take time to get back into the piece. So, just reading, editing, or adding to it every day helps keep the ideas fresh in your mind for when you have the time to really commit to finishing it. (less)
