Born in Washington, DC, I was raised in Southern California where I ran wild with coyotes in the hills above Malibu. I worked in the military-industrial complex, academia, as a consultant, and now as a full-time writer. I am the author of UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES, UNCHARTED TERRITORY, and UNSAFE HAVEN, Mad Max mysteries. My stand-alone psychological suspense novel, EYES WITHOUT A FACE, features a female serial killer, that oh-so-rare creature. OUT OF THE DESERT is a piece of literary fiction, a coming-of-age novel which follows a group of children growing up in the Mojave Desert. They leave and return in search of a way to chart

Oh, Lynne, you've shone the spotlight on one of the biggest bugaboos writers face either in a single book or a sequel.

First, I create a timeline for every chapter. I know when action took place and where. That timeline also fixes the story in a specific year so I can make sure I have the technology right. Wouldn't do to have a character using a Kindle five years before they were launched.

I have a second table with ages so I can grow a character without goofing up the age (too much).

I have a character list so that I know what each character looks like (hair and eye color, height, weight, general build. I know what they keep in their pockets/on their chests of drawers/in the bathroom. I won't use 99% of these details but they help me stay with the character.

Do readers have the right to be picky? YOU SURE DO. Sorry, I didn't mean to shout. Some of my favorite conversations with readers concern oopsies in a story. Hint: In Unintended Consequences, there are two. Did you find them???(less)

My first favorite is Agatha Christie. I'd read all of her books before I started high school. I love her quiet language, her love of poisons, and the intriguing recurring characters she created. I wish she'd written more Tommy and Tuppence stories.

On the darker side, I love police procedurals. Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series is a particular favorite. He's complicated and conflicted but has a strong sense of honor and right and wrong.

I read most of the Scandinavian mysteries. They are so violent yet again produce strong characters with well defined sense of justice.

As you can guess, I no longer read many cozies. Maybe it's time to visit some of the newer cozy writers.(less)

Michael Petrie Betsy ... I hope you will check out my newest novel, SAME ROAD, DIFFERENT PATHS by Michael E. Petrie, based on a journal I began keeping in my teens growing up in the Chicago suburbs. The story will take you from once upon a time in America to right now ... with adventures chronicled in real time of hitchhiking across the Great American Southwest, living on a Navajo Reservation, rodeo cowboys, California's 70s music scene, falling in and out of love, marriage & family.

I did so by limited the sites where I'd participate: FB, Goodreads, LinkedIn and Twitter, although I don't really think I use Twitter to its advantage. Glad I jump-started you to get more involved with Goodreads. I'll check out your author page.

Betsy

William Marden Betsy, thanks for the friend invite on Goodreads. I have been shamefully lacking in participating on Goodreads despite the fact I knew I should have been on it. I tried to put my first book on there but then I lapsed. I've self pubbed three novels since then under two names but I've restrictd my marketing to the readers I already have emails for. I've talked to writers who have used goodreads correctly, so I know what I shoudl be doing. But I've had a hard enough time just writing what i've written and there's so much more I want to do. I keep promising myself I'm going to spend a few days just diving into goodreads and updating my info. Your invite served as a reminder. thanx. and I hope your writing efforts have been as much fun, and more successful, than mine have been.
